We’re always harping on about how useful infographics are and how much attention people pay to them. So, I thought it only right to put our assumptions to the test by asking if you if you agree…

I did a survey (of 55 people: a cross section of ages ranging from 17 – 72, men and women, who were from a variety of economic backgrounds) on how people react to infographics, by asking three simple questions. I then attempted to use this information to create my own infographic.

The recent tsunami in Japan and the protest which took over London last Saturday have both produced pages and pages of copy. On top of that there has been hundreds of videos, live blogs and live tweets. But, for me, it was the photographs which proved to be the most powerful, and not surprisingly, the place to see the best variety was onĀ  Mail Online.

Infographics aren’t always made up of graphs, tables or pictures. This week, we liked the use of images on the front-page story of The Independent on Sunday.

The special report by Nina Lakhani, ‘Haiti, One Year On’ examines the country’s plights, following the earthquake that brought devastation to millions this time last year.

The three-page spread both draws upon the broad affects of the earthquake as well as individual stories. It also presents key statistics and a summary of previous reports from the newspaper. It does this through successful layout and careful selection of appropriate photographs.

No more pie come June 2011

 

Over the course of the next few months, City University MA newspaper journalism students, Catherine Wylie, Francesca Holloway and Lucy Osborne will blog about visual journalism and infographics. They will analyse and discuss the role of visuals in modern journalism; what they add, and in some cases take away, from the news. Do infographics and pictures always aid understanding? What new visual trends are developing? Can images speak louder than words?
